According to the Huffington Post, nearly 50 billion water bottles are consumed yearly – and the United States alone contributes to 60% of that consumption. That’s a statistic I’d rather not be apart of.
A simple alternative – carry a mason jar or reusable water bottle with you at all times. If you’re forgetful (like me) have one that you can leave at work and one to keep in your car.
Obviously, water isn’t the only single serve drink on the market. Pepsi, Coke, Gatorade – the list goes on for miles. Here are some suggestions for drinks with a little more flavor that you can make at home and take on the go:
Make your own Flavored Water
You can find glass jars like these at a variety of places, but I always like to check thrift stores or second hand stores first. In our area we have multiple Savers, Goodwill, Salvation Army, AmVets, and Volunteers of America Resale Store locations within 10 miles of each other. Better yet, just use any type of water pitcher you might already have at home.
Next step: Fruit. Pick whatever you like the best. I prefer using the cheaper fruits like apples, lemons/limes and cucumbers because once I’m done using them for the water they just go into the compost bin.
I keep the same fruit and add water for about a week or so. According to infusedwaters.com they recommend you infuse for 4 hours in the refrigerator and then remove the fruit or herbs lest they decompose. They also say that the fruit shouldn’t decompose in the cold temperatures of the fridge though, so use your own discretion. I’d rather keep the fruit in there until it loses flavor – that way I don’t feel like I’m wasting anything by composting it prematurely.
The benefits of making your own flavored water at home instead of buying prepackaged single serve beverages are vast:
- You feel better about yourself. Sure, it’s more convenient to grab a soda for lunch while your out, but by taking the time to make something yourself you get the added benefit of feeling self sufficient. The millions of dollars spent by big businesses on marketing are completely wasted on you now – Congratulations.
- You save a crap ton of money. Single serve drinks are a rip off. Plus, you already pay a water bill at home – use what you’re already paying for.
- You are inadvertently being healthier. Trading in sodas and sports drinks for homemade infused water means no more high fructose corn syrup in your drinks, no sketchy “natural flavors” have been added – it’s just you, your fruit, and your water.
Sounds like a happy ending to me.
